Join professional photographer Gary Harris for a group landscape photography workshop along the amazing shores of Lake Superior. Lake Superior has beautiful rocky shorelines, amazing State Parks with waterfalls and lighthouses, Duluth Harbor in Duluth, MN. and Agate Bay in Two Harbors , MN.

  • Date: June 14-16 2025
  • Location: Two Harbors, MN
  • Group Size: 8 Participants
  • Cost: $800.00

Throughout the workshop we will visit some of the most picturesque locations along the shores of Lake Superior. We will have access to Brighton Beach, Stoney Pointe, Duluth Harbor, Agate Bay, Gooseberry Falls State Park and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and much more. We will not have a set itinerary. Depending on the weather conditions, we will choose the best place to photograph with the weather conditions we have. This will allow you to get the best images possible.

During this workshop, weather permitting, we will have the opportunity for Saturday sunset, Sunday sunrise and sunset and Monday sunrise before ending the workshop. The rest of the time we will be shooting as many locations as we can, so you can get as much camera and learning  time as possible. Plus, we can do some basic editing in Adobe Lightroom.

Participants are responsible for getting to the workshop, flights, rental cars, lodging and food.

What Will I Learn

I am excited to teach you as much as I can about landscape photography within the time we have together.

Basics of Landscape Photography: How to get the most out of your photography equipment, Choosing your subject/ supporting subjects, composition, using the light that is available, how to make creative choices and creative vision.

Landscape Photography Techniques: Shooting in Manual Mode and RAW Format, White Balance, Focusing, Exposure Bracketing, Focus Stacking and Long Exposures.

Post-Processing: Since editing a photo is just as important as taking the photo itself, you will learn the basic techniques of photo editing in Adobe Lightroom.

Skill Level

Photographers of all skill levels are welcome. Whether a beginner or advanced photographer, this workshop will offer something to everyone. The small group size ensures personal attention to everyone, so everyone can learn at their own pace and get the most out of their experience.

Physical Difficulty

Easy to Moderate

Lake Superior has some rugged shoreline with rocks, cobblestones and boulders. We will be hiking along the shoreline, which will have you walking or climbing on rocks. A walking stick may be handy if you have trouble with your footing. There is nothing dangerous, but you have to be careful. Rocks can be slippery or loose under your feet.

Recommended Gear

The camera equipment you already have is likely perfect for doing landscape photography, however I do recommend the following equipment.

DSLR or Mirrorless camera (no phones or iPads)

Wide-Angle Lens (16-35mm)

Mid-Range Lens (24-70mm)

Telephoto Lens (70-200mm)

Sturdy Tripod (tripods help keep the camera steady)

Polarizing Filter

Neutral Density Filter (6 stop or 10 stop or both for long exposures)

Spare Camera Batteries

Remote Shutter Release

Photographers Backpack or Camera Bag (need to protect your gear)

Headlamp (for hiking in the dark during sunrise shoots)

Walking Stick (if needed for uneven terrain)

Laptop or iPad with Adobe Lightroom or Lightroom Mobile

Recommended Clothing & Other Items

The weather in June on Lake Superior can vary from sunny and warm, to cool and damp. Mornings can be very cool but the day can warm up quickly. Sweatshirts or light jackets are recommended, and a medium jacket or coat may come in handy on cooler mornings. Hiking boots or tennis shoes are recommended. It's also handy to have a rain jacket, in case of inclement weather.

I would also recommend having a water bottle and extra water, snacks, Tylenol and gloves.

Lodging

There are numerous places to stay along the shores of Lake Superior. I will be staying at the Voygeur Motel at 1227 7th Avenue in Two Harbors, MN. While you can stay anywhere you like, I recommend staying in Two Harbors. We will be meeting and leaving for our destinations from the motel parking lot from where I'll be staying. You can get rooms at the Voygeur Motel from around $110 per night.

We have numerous shooting destinations to the north and the south of Two Harbors. By staying in Two Harbors, all shooting destinations will be no more than 40 minutes away. Most places are within 20 to 30 minutes.

I would book a room as soon as you can if attending the workshop.

Meeting Information

We will have a meet-and-greet at 4pm on June 14th in the parking lot of McDonalds in Two Harbors. This will allow everyone to get to know each other, have a quick overview of the workshop and get something quick to eat before heading out to shoot a couple of locations, including sunset.
